Let’s first understand the concept of ring stiffness. Ring stiffness refers to the comprehensive parameters of the plastic drain pipe buried underground resisting external pressure and load capacity. In order to ensure that the plastic drain pipe buried underground can work safely under external pressure load, the choice of ring stiffness is a key item in the design. If the ring stiffness of the pipe is too small, the pipe may undergo large deformation or become instable in the pressure and bending, and be destroyed. On the contrary, if the ring stiffness is selected too high, the cross-sectional moment of inertia will be too large, which will result in too much material use and too high cost.
Customers often ask whether they can choose the ring stiffness based on the burial depth, external pressure load, etc., and then use a relatively simple method to choose the ring stiffness. The answer is no. The reason is that the mechanism of the buried plastic drain pipes bearing external pressure load is the "pipe and soil joint action", which is determined by the combination of the pipe's ability to withstand the load (ring stiffness) and the soil around the pipe (backfilling material) bearing the load. Therefore, the selection of ring stiffness not only depends on the external pressure load, but also on the soil (backfilling material) around the pipeline after laying, but also on the type of backfilling material, the degree of compaction, the original soil on the groove side, etc.
In my country's current technical regulations, the methods for selecting ring stiffness are: 1. Preliminary selection; 2. Conducting "pipe structure design"; 3. Pipe deformation verification, strength calculation, and pressure bending instability calculation. If the calculation result does not meet the requirements, the ring stiffness will be increased, then recalculated, or reduced, and then recalculated.
